Business Group Members Recognized as Leaders by Mental Health AmericaOn November 16, Mental Health America (formerly the National Mental Health Association) recognized leaders in the mental health community that continue to encourage access to mental health services across the country. Mental Heath America honored two National Business Group on Health members for their commitment to mental health services.Wayne Burton, MD of JPMorgan Chase received the Innovative Program Award. This award recognizes a company that seeks creative solutions to ensuring their employees have access to the mental health care they need. Through an innovative, comprehensive approach that champions the needs of its employees, this company demonstrates leadership and serves as a model for others. Jack Mahoney, MD of Pitney Bowes received the Leadership Initiative Award. This award honors a company that demonstrates broad based solutions to mental health coverage for employees. The corporate initiative helps address workplace wellness for all employees so they can learn to achieve mental health throughout their lifetimes.

2007 Award for Excellence and Innovation in Value PurchasingWinner of the 2007 Innovation and Excellence in Value Purchasing Award — Dr. Barbara Starfield, MD, MPH, University Distinguished Professor at Johns Hopkins University & Medical Institutions. This award was given to Dr. Starfield at Business Health Agenda 2007.
Business Insurance — "Benefits Manager of the Year" 2006A caring approach to solving problems: Focus on health and service helps utility achieve fast resultsChris McSwain has accomplished more in his brief, two-year tenure as director of compensation and benefits at Columbia, S.C.-based SCANA Corp. than most benefit managers can hope to achieve in a lifetime. Though most would say his most significant accomplishment has been to reverse the electric and gas utility company's upward spiral in health care costs, which rose a total of 201% over the past three years, Mr. McSwain, who was a chemist before he entered the human resources field, is more proud of SCANA's new health resource center and in-house pharmacy. As a result of a health and productivity improvement initiative that included medical management, integrated absence management, a lower-cost provider network and higher copayments for use of hospital emergency rooms and specialists, SCANA's health care tab for 2005 is running 5% below that of 2004. In addition, the average short term disability duration has fallen 15% to 3.7 weeks from 4.7 weeks—saving the company approximately $500,000 annually—and cardiac and diabetes inpatient claims are down 5% to 18.2 per 1,000 covered lives.
