Benefit Design Tools

The National Committee on Evidence-Based Benefit Design provides practical coverage and purchasing recommendations for health benefits managers on high cost/high volume procedures and conditions. These recommendations focus on specific conditions, treatments or procedures where greater consistency with evidence-based guidelines can improve quality of care.

Recommendations:

  1. Are based on the best available scientific evidence of medical effectiveness;
  2. Encourage employee involvement in the decision-making process without making benefits too complex; and
  3. Offer several different options for coverage, since each organization has its own approach to employee benefits.

Do you want to support Evidence-Based Medicine but you're not sure what you can do about it? This Strategic Checklist Members Only addresses areas where evidence of medical effectiveness already exists, while at the same time laying the groundwork for a supportive corporate culture in which members are receptive to the application of new evidence as it becomes available.

Benefit Manager Guides translate scientific research on the medical effectiveness of selected procedures into practical coverage recommendations. These recommendations offer one approach to coverage and are not intended as the only appropriate approach. In addition to coverage policy, these guides address purchasing and member supports as other critical leverage points for moving health care towards agreement with the best medical evidence available.

Benefit Manager Guides:

Benefit Manager Coverage Briefs provide brief summaries of recent clinical evidence assessments with benefit plan design options in light of the findings.

Issue Briefs from the National Committee present topics in evidence-based medicine to benefit managers and other health industry professionals in a clear, succinct format. For further information on health care quality as it relates to costs, see the Issue Briefs released by the Institute on Health Care Costs and Solutions.

Issue Briefs:

Evidence Alerts are 1-2 page summaries of important new research findings that may have implications for coverage policy, health care purchasing, employee engagement/education, or public policy.
