About the Institute on the Costs and Health Effects of Obesity

The National Business Group on Health in 2003 launched the Institute on the Costs and Health Effects of Obesity to tackle one of the nation's most serious and preventable health problems. With the support and direction of its Founding Board, the Institute has already produced important tools to estimate the cost of obesity to employers, initiate employee communication on healthy weight, and design employer-sponsored wellness programs that meet HIPAA requirements.

Going forward, we will build on the best, evidence-based information to:

  1. Identify and disseminate effective interventions, corporate policies and environmental changes to support healthy weight and healthy lifestyles;
  2. Serve as a reliable resource for employers and link to the best information and experts available;
  3. Create and maintain an online resource to support large employers and others seeking practical solutions to the obesity crisis;
  4. Promote a national weight and exercise awareness initiative.
