Excluding Women's Contraceptives from Health Plans Ruled a Violation by Federal Agency

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission ruled that it is illegal for corporate health-care plans to exclude female contraceptives if they cover other preventive medicines or services. The ruling stems from charges filed with the agency by two nurses who claim that their employer discriminated against them by failing to cover contrapectives when it covered other preventive measures. This move by the EEOC could lead to a large rise in litigation by women whose companies' health-care plans exclude prescription contraceptives such as birth-control pills.
